It’s Tops!

Yay
Update
Tragically more than a decade after I took this picture on my way in for a delicious hamburger after a long flight, It’s Tops was killed, having survived 85 years in business, by Covid, like Gaylord’s Caffe Espresso. This is a huge loss for San Francisco. It was one of my favorite places. For more than a decade my schedule would take me out SFO for part of the week and on my return, driving back to Oakland, I always looked forward to stopping at It’s Tops for a welcome home Hamburger. Over the years I got to know the staff and some of the regulars, who were frequently colorful and diverse and entertaining.
It’s tops was family owned from the founding in 1935, It’s tops weathered wars and social upheaval and changing demographics and was an anchor of temporal stability. Walking in was like going back in time in decor and service and quality of food. Seeing the neon sign lit in the dark after a long trip would brighten a tired heart.

Excellent, open until 2:00am
The food is really excellent. We were taken by people visiting from Thailand, who ordered in Thai, made fun of us for using chopsticks (only for use with dishes of Chinese origin) and having Sake with our dinner, how odd. They said “this is what we eat in Thailand when we go out.”
Good enough for me.

New UAL Pods
Saturday, October 11, 2008
I got a chance to experience the new UAL business class pods on a UAL international flight routed from Zurich through San Francisco to Sidney. As it is one of the first six 767’s out of about 100 with the new Panasonic seat pods, a system-trained UAL employee was on board to answer questions. My observations are:

Dinner with Chris and Mona.
We ate dinner at the Supperclub in San Francisco. The food was good – a prefix menu in normal and food-challenged versions. During the meal the staff provides entertainment, such as this lovely opera star.
We were there on a night when a company had a special event in the main room so us regular diners were consigned to the smaller private room.
One reclines on bedding to eat, which is fine, though the provided table spaces are not sufficient for the plates and the resulting arrangements are a bit clumsy.
The food was excellent and I’d go back on a normal night.

Sutro Baths

Just a kinda cool picture of the fractured end of a rail line that used to run through a tunnel at Sutro Baths in SF and is slowly dissolving.
